ND YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) laser is a type of laser that is commonly used for tattoo removal. Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers produce short pulses of high-intensity light that penetrate the skin and target the ink particles in the tattoo. The light energy is absorbed by the ink particles, causing them to break up into smaller fragments. These fragmented particles are then eliminated by the body's immune system over time.
Working Theory
Nd:YAG laser energy is selectively absorbed by the deeper levels of the dermis and allows for treatment of deeper vascular lesions such as telangiectasias, hemangiomas and leg veins.The laser energy is delivered using long pulses which are converted into heat in the tissue. The heat impacts the vasculature of the lesions. In addition, the Nd:YAG Laser can treat at a more superficial level; by heating the subcutaneous skin (in a non-ablative manner) it stimulates neocollagenesis which improves the appearance of facial wrinkles.
In addition to the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, other types of lasers that can be used for tattoo removal include the Alexandrite laser and the Ruby laser. However, the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is the most commonly used due to its effectiveness and versatility.
